Info online is so confusing. I see I can order it online, but is it worth it? Can I wait to purchase it at the first park I go to or should I get it at a store outside the park? Also, is it even worth the $80 if I don't intend to return to the parks in the year after this trip?

If you're going to 4 or more parks, it's absolutely worth the $80 to get an annual parks pass!
I've heard of passes getting lost in the mail, so I don't recommend that option. However, I do recommend getting the pass before entering Zion or Grand Canyon because there's usually a faster entrance line for pre-paid pass holders (if you don't have a pass, it could take up to an hour).
If you start your trip in Vegas, take a drive out to Red Rock Canyon NCA and buy your pass at the entrance station. Note that between September-June you need to make a reservation to enter the park. You can usually reserve a day in advance, unless it's a holiday weekend.
